Krist Liquor: Meat Market

Krist Liquor: Meat Market

last week i posted a snapshot about a taiwanese place here in san diego and W.Ying pointed out an undeniable truth. San Diego = mexican food. so in light of that i thought i’d follow it up with SD’s bread and butter. i wasn’t going to post this until after easter but got my housemate’s blessing so here it is.

quick context. my housemate’s been fasting meat for lent and along the way he’s invited friends to see what he’s been cooking (take a look at jmw590.wordpress.com). he’s only got 4 more days! Go J.WU!

now being able to see and taste his vegetarian food first hand is amazing and he’s done an outstanding job holding true to his fast. that boy can cook. initially i wanted to support him so i started eating less meat myself.

but then i snapped back to reality and decided to make up for lost meat. so i waited until he was out of the house on saturday before throwing meat on the grill. great globs of glorious mexican marinated meat on the grill. yeah.

pollo asada and adobada. chef at work taught me how to make spanish rice!

Tucked in between a jack in the box and a KFC is a tiny unassuming liquor store on Linda Vista ave. a few blocks away from church. I owe a huge one to H.Lang for bringing me here the first time. only a linda vista local would have this kind of knowledge. i must have driven by this place hundreds of times over the years without realizing it.

Against the far wall inside is a meat market that sells the best pollo asada (marinated chicken) in San Diego. i can confidently make that claim and stand by it. at $2.70/lb it just doesn’t get any better than that. they have a vast assortment of asada, adobada, al pastor and the price is extremely fair. packet of a dozen corn tortillas…0.99c! have tried their carne asada and adobada so far and they’re absolutely great too.

i’m no expert griller and when it comes to bbq, I typically leave it on a little too long. in spite of that, it still comes out the juiciest most flavorful meat ever. the only reason left to go to taco shops are for salsas which i can’t make. krist sells salsas too, but i’ve yet to try. oooo…another reason to go back!

I don’t know much about taiwanese food. except that I like it. Fortunately! There’s a taiwanese restaurant that opened in La Jolla Miramar and it’s been vouched for by a few people. Seems like the guy’s been in business cooking for taiwanese families for a while out of his home kitchen but this is a new restaurant venture. actually a friend of mine had food catered by Mr. Chen for a month after his wife (who is taiwanese) gave birth.

i liked it! the owner’s son manned the front while his dad was in the back. nice guy. feels good trying a mom and pop type restaurant.

reviews haven’t been as kind so far but I haven’t really heard of a better taiwanese alternative down here in SD, so go check it out!

Has it really already been a year? Almost! This year’s ultimate tournament, hosted by the ever gracious CBC SD fielded 10 teams. Once again this year’s tournament fundraising efforts went to Hope Harvest International, an organization whose mission is to parent neglected orphans in impoverished areas in China.

Chris Changchien captained the team this year and his strong recruiting efforts paid off as this year CEC had a whopping 17 players on its roster. A core nucleus of 11 returning players looked great on paper, but scratching just a little deeper revealed only a handful of those players had touched a frisbee since last year’s tournament. the day before the tournament CEC lost rookie Eugene Lee to a virus. get better Eug!

(left) G.Moy with a ridiculous throw. can you even figure out how that frisbee got thrown?! (right) one of a few close calls that day
anyway. enough with the recap. CEC ended up going 4-2 through the day, beating out frisbee wizard Kuangkai’s team (the team CEC lost to in last year’s overtime sudden death championship thriller) in the semi-finals and setting the stage for a repeat appearance in the finals.

unfortunately, cramps and injuries hampered both teams in the finals. Starridge ended up with the win but not before CEC had the tournament highlight of the day when Ryan Falomir dove superman style for the last catch of the day. Final score was ~9-6. Despite the loss, it was a great and fun day of ultimate.

inches from victory the last 2 years, you can bet we’ll be back!
on a separate note. having participated in a few different sports tournaments in the SD area, I firmly believe this tournament is consistently the most fun tourney. The teams truly come out to have fun and there is a great balance of competitiveness and sportsmanship. major props to the organizers and thanks for putting on a model competition that I hope becomes a standard of how sports ministry can be done.

that’s a happy bunch!

Night of the shoot

For those of you who are interested in downloading the song, Chris has released the song on www.chrischangchien.bandcamp.com for free!

The video was shot using a canon t2i with a nikkor 35mm f/2. Flood light for external lighting and for audio recording equipment, you’ll have to ask Chris Changchien. no idea.

Post Production
Converted from H.264 to AIC using MPEG Streamclip and edited in Final Cut Express 4. Found out that FCE only accepts 30fps so shooting in 60fps is pretty useless unless the video is slowed down prior to importing into FCE. You’ll notice the 60 fps –> 30 fps at the 0:19-0:22 mark in the video.

This was the first time I’ve ever adjusted color in a video and found the task to be quite tedious as the filters had to be adjusted for each individual clip. Adjusting to FCE from Premiere will take some time to get used to but all in all a pretty pleasant experience.
