San Diego Comic Con 2014

An interesting comic con. A year after missing out because of a trip to Singapore, I was back, thanks again to San Diego’s FM radio 94.1 comic con correspondent Dexter Odani! The layout this year was all kinds of weird and there were definitely a lot more displays outside of the convention than previous years. Companies took huge booths outside the convention center to feature Constantine, Black List, Assassin’s Creed, Game of Thrones, and much more. Inside the convention hall the summer hollywood movie blockbusters no longer held center square and they really separated the games from the comics from the movies this year.

As always the cosplayers came out in full swing, even in pretty hot heat. Super impressed! At the end of the day, I came out of the convention to check out the zombie walk and catch up with some coworkers. Long day but always fun to people watch!

San Diego Comic Con: Walking Dead Experience

Couples that survive zombie apocalypses together stay together…or something like that. J and K are getting married this coming weekend and to prepare for all that craziness they did the “Walking Dead Experience” with a few friends. It’s essentially a zombie run through a deserted Petco Park (home to the SD Padres). The course covers 1.5 miles, there are huge portions of straight up sprinting for you life, dodging zombies, clearing obstacles…this was no joke, real blood was spilt! It took them ~35 mins to finish.

At the end of the course is an inspection zone; all survivors are screened and any that infected (touched by zombies) are quarantined and dealt with.

Their experience was recorded on a GoPro and I edited it down to a 8 min exhilarating ride. Didn’t ask permission from J yet actually, so I might take this down later. In the mean time. Enjoy!

Another year of comic con craziness. After going last year and feeling entirely overwhelmed by the sensory overload of the glitz and the glamor, this year was much more manageable. Over the last few years my interest in comics have steadily risin and since last year’s comic con has expanded from web comics and graphic novels to tv shows.

It’s definitely more fun to attend comic con with a few things that you really want to see but the real joy of it all is seeing such excitement and passion. Granted, sometimes it overflows into weirdness but on the whole a lot of these people are really super fans. the most enjoyable part of comic con has got to be people watching and the costumes.

San Diego Comic Con: Preview Night

Thought this year would be another year I’d miss the Comic Con show as it rolled into town. Not so! A last minute hook up (literally at 4:50pm) with a co-worker had me strolling in SD’s convention center and taking in the sights…and boy, it was sensory overload. I guess preview night is shorter than the other days but everything was going full throttle! 

There was so much going on. On one hand it’s a lot bigger than i could have imagined but on the other hand, it was a lot smaller than I thought. I always assumed the panels were conducted in separate conference rooms. Maybe they are but it didn’t look like it. Looked like everything happened on the floor. Crazy costumes already on preview night, so I can’t imagine what people will come up with in the next few days.

unfortunately because i found out so last minute I didn’t get a chance to check out my favorite web comic writer’s booths! the program was pretty difficult to navigate and I wasn’t too sure what companies the web comics were a part of so oh wells. In case you were wondering, favorite web comics include: control alt del, least i could do, questionable content, girls with slingshots, phD, doghouse diaries, saturday morning breakfast cereal comics…at least for my regular rotation.

Before I knew it, it was over…but whew what an experience and what a spontaneous change of events!

**edit: they DO use conference halls for specific panels. i was wondering where they’d shove the hoards of teens lining up for the twilight panel!
